Closing Up Your Vacation Home for the Season

Labor Day weekend is almost here, and for some of our customers it’s time to close up a beloved summer vacation home for the season.  Here are some tips to make sure your property is properly prepared for the winter season:

Inspect the property for damage, and make any necessary repairs.

Turn off the water and then drain the pipes by turning on a tap until no more water runs out.

Empty, clean, and unplug appliances, such as your refrigerator, oven, washer, and dryer.

Turn off and drain your hot water heater.

Store outdoor furniture and equipment in a locked shed.

Create a home inventory to make sure all of your property and items are documented in case of damage while you are away.

Clean out your fireplace and chimney.

Ask neighbors to keep an eye out for suspicious activity during your absence, and leave contact information with neighbors or local police.

Have a great Labor Day, and give us a call if you have any insurance concerns or questions about your vacation home!
