Hail: Are You Covered?

Tomorrow marks the beginning of spring, and with spring comes spring thunderstorms. Thunderstorms often bring the risk of damage from hail. Are you insured from hail damage? Read below to find out!

For your car to be insured from hail damage, you must purchase comprehensive coverage for your auto policy. Comprehensive coverage covers damage for your own vehicle for incidents other than collisions. That includes damage to the paint and body of your car caused by hail, and usually the windows/windshield, also.

Most homeowners policies cover hail damage, including damage to your roof, siding, windows, fencing, and other structures (up to your policy limits). However, it’s always a good idea to look over your policy or give us a call if you’re not sure about your coverage. Another good thing to keep in mind is that hail damage is no guarantee of a full roof replacement. Depending on the extent of the damage, the insurance company may choose to pay for repairs to the existing roof. Also, purely cosmetic damage (as in dings on a metal roof) will not be covered; the damage must be structural in nature to result in coverage.

Always allow an insurer to inspect damage (especially to a roof) and determine if you are eligible for coverage before you pay for repairs!
